Inquiry Arts’ capacity and methodologies to increase performing arts engagement through residency design begins with our own curiosity about the role of the arts in active participation in the public life of communities. Strategies range from grassroots-style coalition building to site-specific flash happenings — sometimes magical, playful or whimsical, often participatory and always unexpected — that take stories, questions and themes out of the halls and into public spaces, defying assumptions about the arts and who they are for.

Community Portrait Live Documentaries
Every community is made of stories and histories beyond what mainstream media and history books portray. Sharing these stories can be transformative for both the speaker and the listener. Community Portrait Live Documentaries offer a rare window into the experiences that shape people and the circles of which they are part. Theatrically projected community members' stories combine with live original score, and live poetic narration into a moving multimedia performance that spurs further storytelling.

Radio Play(s) Listening Lab: Storytelling to Strengthen Communities
In each person is a world of perspective and experience that takes the shape of story; this story, when shared, can help further strengthen communities by building meaningful relationships rooted in curiosity, generous listening, and dignity. The Listening Lab is a facilitated forum wherein moving stories told through powerful spoken word, music, and theatrically projected sand animation invite participants into conversations that are honest, intimate, and alive. Imagine: what would it be like for a community to have even greater understanding, even greater respect for its members? Participants are asked to bring their willingness to suspend assumptions and be surprised!

Workshops, Trainings & Learning
Trainings and learning experiences, including workshops, lectures and choral/string collaborations for adults, university students and school-age children offer participants opportunities to channel curiosity and explore personal connections with the questions and themes sparked by performances.
